What is your “perfomance day routine”? Do you sleep in, eat something particular, etc.? How much do you vocalize that day and when? Do you drink more water that day, as well as during intermission/between acts of an opera? Further, do you have any “performance day superstitions or rituals”?
In your video about warming up you say you, “believe in vocal rest and lots of sleep” and your video on stress talked about mainly performance anxiety. How did you deal with daily stress when you were an undergrad and how do you deal with it now? Has your approach to daily stress changed any as you’ve aged? Personally, this kills me so much more than performance anxiety because stress kills my immune system. This is so important since as vocalists our instruments are our bodies.
Speaking of technique from my previous comment, I was also fascinated with the idea of becoming sort of unaware of your throat and focusing on your resonators and a good, low breath. One problem I have is consistency on connecting the two, and once I get a low breath, I don’t know how to pace it. Do you have any tips or exercises I can do to get a better understanding on how to pace my breath and what I should be feeling?
Also, the entry about warming-up was very relatable to me. Whenever I go to practice, I use my warm-up as an indicator to how the practicing is going to go. How much should I let my warm-up govern how well I’m going to practice? Yes, the voice must be warmed up to sing effectively, but I sometimes think I let my warming up get to me. How should I go about differentiating vocal or physical fatigue vs not being completely warmed up?
In your video entry about stress, you talk about performing as a sharing opportunity rather than a performance. How long did it take you to completely adopt that mentality and what did you do or say to yourself to help adopt it? Personally, I majorly stress whenever I have to sing in front of others because I want the performance to be perfect and hopefully highlight every thing I have worked on. I think treating a performance as a chance to show what I love to do would really help me out. How do you calm yourself down without relaxing yourself so much that you become “lazy” on your technique?
